Pediatric Sarcoma Program

The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) has assembled a team of specialists devoted to the medical and surgical management of all types of sarcomas, including: angiosarcomas, fibrosarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, liposarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, neurofibrosarcomas, rhabdomyosarcomas, synovial sarcomas, osteosarcomas, Ewing's sarcomas, and chondrosarcomas.

Treatment Approaches and Options
Treatments for sarcomas include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, and typically, a combination of these modalities yields the greatest chance of success. Each case is presented at CHAM's multidisciplinary tumor board, which comprises radiologists, pathologists, pediatric oncologists, radiation oncologists, orthopaedic oncologists, surgical oncologists, spine surgeons and plastic and reconstruction surgeons.

This process is followed by a group meeting with the patient and family members, where we employ a coordinated care approach. In the context of a single visit, patients can confer with their multi-disciplinary sarcoma specialists to discuss their treatment plan. The coordinated care approach offers a tremendous convenience to patients and families, condensing many visits into one. At CHAM, in addition to the established standard therapies available for the treatment of sarcomas, we offer a myriad of novel and experimental therapies available only at selected sites:
Phase 2 trial of Inhaled cisplatin: Osteosarcoma
Phase 1 trial of combination therapy of sorafenib and topotecan: Solid tumors
Phase 1 trial of combination therapy of vincristine, irinotecan, and temozolomide with metformin: Solid tumors

Our orthopedic oncologists take pride in being able to offer the gamut of reconstructive capabilities such as osteoarticular allograft bone replacement tumor endo-prostheses, and allograft prosthetic composites (APCs). These reconstruction techniques are tailored, after prolonged discussions with patients and their families, to meet the goals and expectations for life after cancer treatment.
