Conditions We Treat

A cancer diagnosis brings uncertainty and doubt. Suddenly, you and your family are thrown into the unexpected—and forced to learn a lot in a short period of time.

CHAM_HemOnc_NursePt_2012_06_003_316x210At the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), we’re experts on a range of cancers and blood disorders, and can help you and your family adjust during this difficult time. Whatever tumor or blood disorder your child may have, we have the expertise to diagnose and quickly arrive at the best treatment plan.

For each child, our team of pediatric specialists works together to determine the best and most effective course of treatment. Our patients benefit from decades of combined expertise, access to the latest technology and treatment methods, and a passionate, proactive approach.

Leukemia and Lymphoma
At CHAM, we offer the most advanced, personalized treatment for children, adolescents and young adults with all forms of hematologic malignancies, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We offer access to cutting-edge treatments through participation in clinical trials aiming to increase cure rates, while decreasing the toxic side effects of treatment. Whenever possible, we use outpatient chemotherapy to maximize patient comfort and decrease disruption to their families’ lives. When medically necessary, we offer high-dose chemotherapy with stem-cell transplantation for patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies or relapsed disease.

Brain Tumors
Treating brain tumors in children requires precision and care. At CHAM, we rely on the combined expertise of our multidisciplinary tumor board, which meets weekly to determine the best course of treatment for each patient. Our experts excel at any combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy and ensure the best possible outcome.

Sickle Cell Disease
CHAM’s Sickle Cell Program takes a proactive approach to sickle cell disease and its side effects. We determine treatment on a case-by-case basis, and may administer medicine management, pain management, psychotherapy, behavior modification, antidepressants and other ancillary treatments. Our highly specialized sickle cell team provides a sophisticated balance of approaches to avoid complications before they arise, and treat them effectively when they do.

Sarcomas
Whenever possible, CHAM treats childhood sarcomas with surgery performed by some of the nation’s finest pediatric and orthopedic surgeons. Patients may also receive a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy to further improve their health and aid their recovery.

Neuroblastoma
CHAM treats each patient with neuroblastoma on an individualized basis, determining the best combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy for each patient. When high intensity chemotherapy is necessary, our patients have access to our world-class bone marrow transplantation team.
