Ways to Give

Use Your Time and Talents to Help CHAM

Volunteers are an important part of the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM). We are always seeking creative, motivated and dependable volunteers, 16 years of age and older, who enjoy working with infants, children and teens.

There are many ways to contribute your time at CHAM, including:

Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program

Our Child Life Program helps patients ranging from newborns to young adults and their families minimize stress and trauma during medical events. This program offers a variety of activities and support services.

We are looking for volunteers for:

  • Playroom groups for games, art, music, video games and more
  • Bedside visits with individual patients for crafts and games
  • Reading and playing with young children
  • Teen activities

Suzanne Pincus Family Learning Place

Our Family Learning Place is a pediatric health information and resource center for children and their families. The center provides health education materials, information about community resources and supportive services. Volunteers are needed to promote health information access, support services and to help families navigate the resource center.

The J.E. and Z.B. Butler Child Advocacy Center

The Child Advocacy Center offers medical care, support services, legal advice, counseling and more to families and children involved in abuse. Serving as children liaisons, the volunteers ensure that the children are receiving the care and support services they need. Volunteers track social service appointments and school attendance, and they organize and supervise structural play for children while parents attend workshops.

Bookmobile

Our Bookmobile delivers resource materials and books to our pediatric units and clinics. In addition, a bedside reading program is available every Monday during the summer to children of all ages.

Book donations are needed for all age groups, including picture books for babies and young children and a variety of books for children, pre-teens and teens. Volunteers are needed to source, purchase and distribute the books.

Reach Out and Read Program

The Reach Out and Read Program is an early literacy program that is established in pediatric clinics in all 50 states, focusing on children 6 months through 5 years old, the most critical years for brain development.

Volunteer readers engage the child’s interest in books by demonstrating what an enjoyable activity reading can be for parents and children alike. Volunteer readers are needed to read to children in the pediatric clinic waiting rooms.

Volunteers on Call

Assist with special events and community outreach programs, and escort approved visitors and Musicians-on-Call to children’s bedside or playroom. In addition to escorting the Musicians-on-Call, the volunteer will interact with patients and inquire about their interest in musical performances.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers at CHAM work in a dynamic learning environment to gain experience or share their time and knowledge. Every effort is made to match each individual with an appropriate and satisfying assignment. With patient and non-patient assignments in more than 200 departments, experienced volunteers are needed for a variety of opportunities:

  • Playroom and bedside volunteers
  • Inpatient readers
  • Waiting room volunteers
  • Emergency Department volunteers
  • Corporate volunteer groups
  • Transport chaperones

Student Internships

These internships help prepare local high school and college-age youth for healthcare careers by providing them with professional mentors and the opportunity to work in a healthcare environment.
