In the Community

Community involvement and taking our innovative wellness and prevention programs out of the hospital and into the community demonstrates the commitment of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) to accessible and culturally-sensitive healthcare for children and their families. Some examples of CHAM’s community engagement programs in both the Bronx and Westchester include:

Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC)
Each year,  nationally recognized, multi-disciplinary program provides more than 55,000 diagnostic and therapeutic services for young children through adults affected by physical, developmental, language and learning disabilities

The Bronx Nutrition and Fitness Initiative for Teens (B’N Fit)
This unique program was developed by the Division of Adolescent Medicine at CHAM and the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center to address the epidemic of obesity impacting the lives and health of Bronx youth, ages 12 to 21. Participants learn how to adopt healthy lifestyles, cook and chose healthy foods and incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. For more information about B’N Fit {provide link}

School Health Program
Montefiore’s School Health Program provides comprehensive primary, preventative and continuing health care to a population of elementary, middle and high school students in the Bronx. Founded in 1983, MSHP is the largest and most comprehensive school-based health program in the country.

The Lead Poisoning Treatment and Prevention Program
CHAM’s environmental health experts help families in New York City and Westchester County care for their children with lead poisoning. The program’s Safe House allows families to get the help they need to decontaminate their homes and improve their children’s health and well-being. The program, founded in 1969, is the oldest and most comprehensive of its kind. For more information about the Lead Poisoning Treatment and Prevention Program {provide link}

The J.E. and Z.B. Butler Center for Children and Families
The Center’s specially-trained staff provides emergency care and support to young victims of abuse and neglect, as well as counseling to children and their families.

Disease Education and Community Outreach
Family Diabetes Day at the Bronx Zoo, hosted by the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology draws hundreds of patients and their families from around the region to learn from CHAM’s diabetes team, professional athletes impacted by diabetes and other children and families living with this chronic condition.
