Childhood emergencies require special expertise and comprehensive care. Children are not just small adults. They react differently to pain and have differences in disease process, anatomy, physiology and psychology from those of an adult patient. We understand these crucial differences and utilize a collaborative approach to provide the highest level of quality care.

The Pediatric Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in the Northeast, caring for approximately 60,000 children each year. Our faculty is one of the largest groups of fellowship-trained and sub-board-certified emergency medicine physicians on the East Coast. Our attending physicians are present in the Emergency Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Patient care is provided by members of the pediatric and emergency medicine house staff under the supervision of primarily full-time Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty. We are dedicated to providing safe and immediate services to ill and injured children, from infants to adolescents.

When your child is sick or injured, it can be difficult to know where to take him or her for care. If your child’s problem is not life-threatening but you need to see a doctor immediately, please visit one of our urgent care centers. Doctors at an urgent care center can help if your child has a cold, flu, earache, sore throat, rash, sprains or any other minor childhood illness.

Children with serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses should be taken immediately to the Emergency Department. Any time your child has difficulty breathing, looks very ill, is irritable or lethargic, or “just doesn’t seem right,” you should utilize our pediatric emergency service.

A child should be brought to the Emergency Department immediately if he or she:
