MS or multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease that damages the coverings of the nerves of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). When the central nervous system (or CNS) is damaged there can be any number of manifestations, depending on what part of the CNS is affected. According to one study, 35% of individuals diagnosed with MS experience spasticity (tightening of the muscles as they are stretched by movement) to a degree that alters some or all of their daily activities.
The specialists at Function have an expertise in the treatments used to manage spasticity and its resulting affects on daily activities. Additionally, some of the treatments offered at Function can alleviate pain associated with the muscle tightness seen in multiple sclerosis. After an evaluation a coordinated treatment plan will be devised that draws upon the groups knowledge and abilities. Treatments considered include:
- Physical therapy, occupational therapy
- Oral medications
- Orthotics and assistive devices
- Nerve injections (BOTOX, Phenol, Alcohol)
- Intrathecal baclofen
- Tendon lengthening and tendon transfers
