Education & Training
Our program of medical education in Fetal Medicine sits within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. We work in close collaboration with the Divisions of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Genetics.
We train physicians for subspecialty board certification as well as post-fellowship advanced training in fetal medicine and ultrasound and provide the basis for career development in Fetal Medicine, clinical investigation and basic science research.
The following are full time training programs:
1. Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows: Basic Fetal Medicine and Prenatal Ultrasound (as part of their 3 years fellowship).
2. Post-fellowship (MFM or clinical genetics): Advanced Fetal Medicine, Fetal Surgery and Advanced Prenatal Diagnosis.
In addition, we provide the following training programs in 1-3 month rotations:
1. Obstetrics and Gynecology residents: Basic ultrasound in OBGYN
2. Medical students (PGY4): OBGYN ultrasound elective
3. Clinical genetics fellows: Ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis
4. Radiology residents: Obstetric ultrasound
5. Physician assistant students: Obstetric ultrasound
Additional educational programs:
• Fetal Diagnosis Rounds: CME accredited biweekly multidisciplinary meeting to present and discuss in depth the newly diagnosed fetal anomalies.
• Fetal Medicine Symposium: CME accredited annual educational conference for all sub-specialties involved in fetal care.
Information for physicians interested in applying for an MFM fellowship:
Applicants who are graduates of United States or Canadian medical schools must document having successfully completed at least four years of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency training with not less than 36 months of clinical obstetrics and gynecology. Foreign medical graduates will be eligible for appointment if they provide written confirmation from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology that their residency training qualifies them as active candidates in obstetrics and gynecology, and if they have passed the Education Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) examination or its equivalent. All applicants must demonstrate that they are fully qualified for medical licensure in New York State.
Fellowship applications are available at the ERAS website. The ERAS deadline for applications is May 31 for the fall match. Applicants selected for interviews will be interviewed during July of each year for the fall match.
