The mission of our program is to alleviate the burdens of epilepsy for the patients we serve and to improve the care of all patients with epilepsy through research and by training the next generation of clinicians and scientists.
We strive to:

- Evaluate the whole person to better understand the needs of each individual in order to maximize quality of life.
- Pursue basic and clinical research to better understand the mechanisms that cause epilepsy and to improve the treatments available to prevent seizures.
Understanding Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Pediatric Specialists
We have one of the nation’s best interdisciplinary teams capable of seamlessly handling patients at all stages of life. In addition to pediatric epileptologists, the Center’s staff now includes neuroradialogists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuropathologists, nurses, physician assistants, and social workers, each of whom is expert in the care of individuals with epilepsy.
Education and Innovation
We offer state-of-the-art technology for intensive epilepsy monitoring and extensive neuropsychological and neurosurgical services for epilepsy treatment. We also pride ourselves on family-focused care aimed at educating and empowering both the patients and their families with the most current information regarding their condition.
Our Comprehensive Epilepsy Center team studies solutions to increase knowledge and improve treatment of childhood epilepsy. Our research team received the prestigious American Epilepsy Society research recognition award, which highlighted our leadership in clinical and basic science research. The Center also has several NIH research grants and is involved in multiple clinical drug trials.
Our physicians offer many noninvasive treatments for children with epilepsy. Antiepileptic medications slow down seizure activity which disrupts normal brain function. Although medications cannot cure seizures, about 50 percent of our patients are seizure free after taking one medication. For patients who are unresponsive to medical therapy, surgical options are available depending on the needs of eachpatient. Surgical options include temporal lobe resection, vagal nerve stimulation, language mapping, or stereotactic radiosurgery. Montefiore offers the most advanced technologies to treat incurable epilepsy.
