Clinical Experience
Our location in the Bronx county of New York City allows for exposure to significant diversity in pathophysiology as we are one of the leading referral and delivery centers not only for the Bronx, but also for portions of Southern Westchester and Rockland counties. All neonatal surgeries, neurointensive care including therapeutic hypothermia and continuous video-EEG monitoring, and neonatal ECMO for infants with hypoxic respiratory failure are performed at the Weiler Division. The Maternal-Fetal Intervention program is based at the Weiler campus providing trainees with opportunities to gain experience in the management of infants requiring EXIT procedures among other acute stabilization care processes. We provide post-discharge high-risk infant health and developmental surveillance follow-up care as an adjunct to each infant’s medical home. We have an active neonatal transport service providing transport services for our unit and other referral NICUs in the Bronx and surrounding communities. The Pediatric Heart Center as well as the Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) at the Children’s Hospital permits us to care for infants with complicated neonatal heart conditions and infants requiring ECMO for non-respiratory indications. The neonatal service provides consultative, collaborative care for these patients in conjunction with Pediatric Cardiology and the PCCU team.
