Education & Training
Dr. Arye Rubinstein established the Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Fellowship Program in 1978 with funding from the National Institutes of Health. It has been continuously certified by the ACGME. Fellows in this track also rotated through the Asthma Center, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation in one month blocks each. They are also rotating through the novel infusion unit. This is one of the largest training programs in the U.S. Over 120 fellows have graduated from the program in the past 36 years, with 27 years having a 100% passing rate in National Board Exams. Graduates of the program serve in academic positions and in clinical activities associated with major medical centers throughout the country. Several faculty members in the Division are former graduates of the training program or of the National Institutes of Health.
The training program is a joint effort of the individual Divisions of Allergy/Immunology of the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine. Dr. Rubinstein directs and coordinates both the Pediatric and Adult Program. He is assisted by Larry Bernstein, MD (Pediatrics), Co-Director of the overall program, and by David Rosenstreich, MD (Internal Medicine). The program is approved for 6 fellows, 5 in the Pediatric/Internal Medicine Track and 1 in the Internal Medicine Track. There are two tracks:
- Pediatric/Internal Medicine Track. This main track is approved for four fellows and coordinated by Dr. Bernstein. The Pediatric/Internal Medicine Track takes fellows trained in either Medicine or Pediatrics and is integrated into the overall program.
- Adult Track. This smaller track is approved for one fellow coordinated by Dr. Rosenstreich. Adult track fellows have the opportunity to design their own elective rotation schedules based on their educational needs and interests. These are usually taken as part-time participation in one-month blocks for some electives and as full-time, one-month blocks for others, such as dermatology. The schedule is very flexible and can be adjusted based on the educational and research needs of the fellow.
