Prior to the development of cirrhosis, patients with NAFLD are asymptomatic. Most are first suspected to have fatty liver disease based on abnormal serum liver tests or ultrasound and after extensive testing for other etiologies of liver disease. Currently, however, NAFLD can only be definitively diagnosed by biopsy.
