ThinkstockPhotos-480335009_316x210The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology at CHAM offers treatment for all ear, nose and throat illnesses. As a parent, you know when your child is having trouble hearing or learning to speak. Our specialists ensure that your child benefits from the latest auditory and communication health technology. No child is too young for a complete auditory checkup. 

Our Division also regularly collaborates with various specialties throughout CHAM to treat children with cancer, vascular anomalies, thyroid and airway problems (reconstructive and restorative tracheal/laryngeal surgery) and those in need of restorative hearing surgery (pediatric cochlear implantation).

Major areas of care provided include treatment for head and neck tumors and masses, major airway and voice surgery, cochlear implantation, innovative techniques for tonsillectomy and computer-guided sinus surgery.

Cochlear Implantation

Modern medicine has many solutions for babies born with hearing deficiencies. We are proud to have the only cochlear implantation program based in a New York City children's hospital. The use of cochlear implants has revolutionized the treatment of hearing loss, providing thousands of children the ability to hear and communicate.

Our physicians believe that children benefit from the input of multiple specialists before a treatment plan is developed. That's why we work with the Craniofacial Center and Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Team to provide multidisciplinary care, including:

  • Pediatric genetics
  • Developmental pediatrics
  • Pediatric pulmonary
  • Plastic surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Thoracic surgery

PROGRAMS & CENTERS

Children’s Hearing Intervention Program (CHIP)

CHIP identifies and diagnoses hearing problems and other communication disorders in newborn infants and older children. Working with the Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation (CERC) unit, we provide infant auditory screening, otolaryngologic & developmental pediatric examinations, behavioral audiometry, central auditory processing function tests, speech-language evaluation, and psychological/educational assessment. 

Treatments for pediatric hearing impairment or communication issues include auditory training for infants and children, amplification strategies, recommendations and follow-up; speech and language therapy; and educational recommendations.
