Goal
The goal of this educational activity is to provide pediatric caregivers with up-to-date, evidence-based information on important and current topics. Participants will gain knowledge of new developments in the field of pediatrics that will be applicable to their practice and meet their educational gaps.
Intended Audience
This activity is intended for pediatricians and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of pediatric patients.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Analyze health concerns and key developmental issues in caring for transgender and gender non-conforming youth.
- Integrate gender-affirming language and behaviors into the care of all youth.
- Examine differential diagnosis and review indicators for screening pediatric patients with joint pain.
- Recognize the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and differentiate between patients who should be screened.
- Describe the limitations of commonly used tests in diagnosing NAFLD and currently available treatment options.
- Distinguish between sickle cell trait, sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies by interpreting a hemoglobin electrophoresis.
- Recognize situations that require special considerations for patients with sickle cell disease.
- Describe how newborn screening is expanding to include complex disorders that do not meet traditional newborn screening criteria and the complex ethical issues surrounding this expansion.
- Distinguish between normal variations in the development of the lower extremity and variations that are pathologic.
